There is thought to have been a church on the site of the present day Inveresk parish church, which was built in 1805, since the 6th century. Prior to the reformation the church belonged to the Abbey of Dunfermline and it was dedicated to St Michael. Three three mission churches were additionally built within the parish of Inveresk (also known as Musselburgh Inveresk): Wallyford, erected in 1905, Smeaton, erected in 1908 and Whitecraig, erected in 1953. Latterly in the 20th century Musselburgh Inveresk became known as Musselburgh St Michael's Inveresk in respect of the churches earlier dedication. The kirk session of Inveresk was disjoined from the Presbytery of Edinburgh by the General Assembly in 1591and annexed to the Presbytery of Dakeith in the same year. Following the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976 it became part of the Presbytery of Lothian. |
