The church of Latheron was a prebend in the Cathedral of Dornoch belonging to the Bishop of Caithness. The parish of Dunbeath was united with Latheron in the 16th century and a new parish church was erected in 1734, which was later extensively repaired in 1822. There was also a chapel of ease erected within the parish at Lybster. In 1938, following the 1929 union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Latheron Parish Church was united with the former United Free congregation of Latheron West. After the local union both churches remained in use. The parish of Berridale and Dunbeath Ross was later linked with Latheron in 1969. The kirk session sits within the Presbytery of Caithness. |
