The origins of Mortlach Church are thought to date back as far as 566 when the site was first used as a place of worship. The present day church dates back in part to the 11th century but it was extensively repaired in both 1876 and 1931. In 1934, following the 1929 union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Mortlach Parish Church was united with the former United Free congregation of Mortlach West. After the local union the former West Church was reconstituted as a church hall. The parish of Glenrinnes was united with Mortlach in 1967 and the united charge, which remained under the name of Mortlach, was linked in the same year with Cabrach. A number of years later in 1982 the link with Cabrach was dropped in favour of a union between the two session under the name of Mortlach and Cabrach. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Strathbogie until, by Act of Assembly 1961, the Presbytery of Strathbogie and the Presbytery of Fordyce were united under the name of the Presbytery of Strathbogie and Fordyce. Following the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976 Mortlach became part of the Presbytery of Moray. |
