Chapel-of-Garioch church, which was known of old as Logie Durno, was dedicated to St Mary and prior to the reformation it belonged to the Abbey of Lindores. At the present site of the church there stood originally a Chapel of St Mary by the name of Our Lady's Chapel of Garioch. In 1583 this chapel was appointed by the Commissioner of the province as the parish church. In 1599 the session of Fetterneir was united with Chapel-of-Garioch and in the same year a new parish church was built on the site of the old chapel. The church erected in 1599 was repaired in 1744 and in 1813 it was replaced by the present day church. In 1929 the United Free Church united with the Established Church, and so in order to differentiate between the former United Free Church at Garioch and the existing Chapel-of-Garioch Kirk Session, the two charges became known as Chapel-of-Garioch North and South respectively. In 1941 Chapel-of-Garioch South united with the congregation of Chapel-of-Garioch North taking the name of Chapel-of-Garioch Church of Scotland. After the local union the former North church buildings ceased to be used. In 1982 Chapel-of-Garioch and Blairdaff were linked together. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Garioch until the reorganisation of the presbyteries in 1976 when it became part of the Presbytery of Gordon. The linkage with Blairdaff was terminated in favour of a union of the two charges on the 24 April 2007. |
