The establishment of the Presbytery of Kirkcudbright was first proposed by the General Assembly in 1581 however in 1601 this area of Galloway was still recorded under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Dumfries (formerly the Presbytery of Nithsdale). The register of the Presbytery begins on 30 April 1700. Following the reorganisation of the presbyteries in 1976, the Presbytery of Dumfries and the Presbytery of Kirkcudbright were united to form the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. Kirkcudbright Presbytery formerly sat within the Synod of Galloway and later of Dumfries. |
