Edinburgh: Greenside was the final burgh church to be provided within the New Town of Edinburgh. It was disjoined from the parish of St Cuthbert's by the Town Council, with concurrence of the presbytery, and erected into an independent parish in 1836. The church however was not opened for worship until October 6th 1939, prior to this time services were held in a chapel which stood in what in now Waterloo Place. The kirk session of Hopetoun united with Greenside in 1974 and in the following year the united charge formed an additional union with Abbey. The parish remained under the name of Greenside through both unions. In 1978 Greenside was further united with Hillside, again remaining under the name of Greenside. The kirk session sits within the Presbytery of Edinburgh. |
