In 1807 a meeting of the proprietors and inhabitants of Portobello and neighbourhood was held to discuss to possibility of establishing a place of public worship in Portobello village. It was unanimously agreed that a church should be built in the area as soon as the funds were available to do so. The foundation stone of the church was laid on 27th October 1808, and the building was opened for worship in 1810, as a chapel of ease. By 1834 the church was declared a parish quoad sacra, and subsequently erected by the Court of Teinds in July 1861. At the union of the United Free Church and the Established Church in 1929, Portobello became known as Portobello Old, to differentiate it from the former United Free charges in Portobello. A union took place between Portobello Old and Portobello Regent Street in 1952, the joint charge being known as Portobello Old and Regent Street Church of Scotland. After this union the Regent Street church building underwent some alterations to convert it into the church hall, whilst the joint congregation worshipped in the Portobello Old Church building. A change of name took place in 1965 when it was decided to drop the Regent Street from the title of the Church, reverting to Portobello Old Church of Scotland. A second union took place with Portobello Windsor Place in 1973 to form Portobello Old and Windsor Place Church, but the reference to Windsor Place was dropped in 1999, and the charge became known as Portobello Old Church of Scotland, once again. |
