In 1724 the General Assembly called for a collection to be made to fund the building of a church at Tongue. The parish was later disjoined from Durness by the Lords Commissioners of Teinds and erected into an independent parish in 1726. In 1937, following the 1929 union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Tongue Parish Church of St Andrew's, was united with the former United Free congregation of Tongue Strath-Tongue. After the local union both churches remained in use. In 1964 Melness and Eribol was linked with Tongue and in 1998 the parish of Melness and Tongue was formed by the union of Melness Eriboll and Tongue. The kirk session of Tongue sat within the Presbytery of Tongue until, in 1961, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Tongue and the Presbytery of Dornoch were united together to form the Presbytery of Sutherland. |
