The Presbytery of Tongue was erected by the General Assembly on the 11th May 1726 and the register of the presbytery begins in the same year. Seven parishes were originally united together to form the Presbytery of Tongue, of these, Eddrachills, Durness, Farr and Reay were annexed from the Presbytery of Caithness and Assynt and Kildonan from Dornoch. The seventh parish was that of Tongue which was erected as a new parish in 1726. All seven did not however remain within the jurisdiction of the Presbytery and in 1727, Kildonan was returned to the Presbytery of Dornoch, as was Assynt several years later in 1736. In 1961, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Tongue and the Presbytery of Dornoch were united together to form the Presbytery of Sutherland. The Presbytery of Tongue sat within the Synod of Sutherland and Caithness. |
