Bridgeton St Francis in the East Church, Glasgow, originated in 1986 with the union of the parishes of Bridgeton and St Francis in the East. Bridgeton (or Bridgeton East) Church, Glasgow, began as a chapel of ease in 1836, with a church in Dale Street built in the following year. The separate Bridgeton quoad sacra parish was formed in 1853 and terminated in 1952 on uniting with Newhall as Bridgeton and Newhall. Bridgeton and Newhall terminated in 1967 on uniting with London Road St Clement?s as Bridgeton. St Francis in the East Church began with mission activity in the Barrowfield area by Calton parish in 1873. Its church, in Queen Mary Street at Bernard Street, Bridgeton, was built in the same year. Six years later it was disjoined from Calton as Barrowfield quoad sacra parish, but changed its name to St Francis in the East around 1930. In 1986 it united with Bridgeton as Bridgeton St Francis in the East. As Church of Scotland charges, the above were in the presbytery of Glasgow and the synod of Glasgow and Ayr (later Clydesdale). |
