It is thought that there was a chapel first built at Rosneath in the 6th century by St Modan who traveled there as a missionary and where he is thought to have died. The church of Rosneath was later granted in 1227 to the Abbey of Paisley in whose possession it remained up to the reformation. In 1780 the parish church was rebuilt and the present day building was erected in 1853, the remains of the church dating from 1780 can still be seen within the church grounds. There also existed within the parish a mission chapel at Kilcreggan. In 1930 the former United Free congregation of Campsail was united with Rosneath after which time the Campsail church was demolished. Upon the centenary of the parish church in 1953 it was re-dedicated to St Modan's and became Roseneath St Modan's parish church. In 1984 Rosneath St Modan's was linked with Craigrownie. The kirk session sits within the Presbytery of Dumbarton. |
