The foundation dated from around 1190 when it was gifted to the Abbey by William the Lion. It was in the Diocese of Brechin. It is thought that in 1678 the church building was built or renewed. The present church is probably located on the site of the original chapel. In 1812 considerable alterations were made and in 1903 the interior reconstructed.

The congregation initially met in a grain loft following the prevention by Lord Panmure of obtaining a church site. In 1853 Fox Maule, Earl of Dalhousie granted the congregation a site upon which to erect their church and also provided endowments for its construction. In 1900 Monikie Free church became Monikie United Free and in 1929 Monikie Craigton.
