The parishes of Kilninian and Kilmore were united in 1628 and following the union each retained its own church. Prior to the reformation in 1560, the church of Kilninian had belonged to the Abbey of Iona and was dedicated to St Ninian. Kilmore was dedicated to St Columba. In 1755 there was a new parish church built at Kilninian and later in 1905 a new parish church was erected at Kilmore. After the union of the Church of Scotland and the United free Church in 1929, the parish church was united with the former United Free Church congregation of Kilninian and Kilmore in 1931 and the former United Free Church was sold soon after. In 1968 Kilninian and Kilmore was linked with Tobermory and a further linkage followed in 1972 with Salen and Ulva, and also with Torosay and Kinlochspelvie. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Mull until, by Act of Assembly, in 1963, the Presbytery of Lorn and the Presbytery of Mull were united under the name of the Presbytery of Lorn and Mull. |
