The church of Kinross was dedicated by Bishop de Bernham in 1246 and in 1315 it was granted to the Abbey of Dunfermline by Robert I. Ministry of Kinross parish is recorded from 1567 in the person of James Dowie. The church of Kinross existed originally at a location close to Loch Leven, this site however was abandoned in 1742 and a new church was erected at, what was then the west side of the town of Kinross. A new church was subsequently built in 1832 to replace the aforementioned building at a different location within Kinross. Following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, the Parish Church of Kinross became known as Kinross West, and the United Free Church in Kinross became Kinross East Church of Scotland. However the East and West Churches united in 1979, and the session continued under the name of Kinross. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Kinross, later Dunfermline and Kinross and presently of Perth. |
