The Kirk Session of Mertoun was established following the Reformation in 1560. Ministers to the parish are recorded from 1560. Prior to the Reformation, the church belonged to the Premonstratensian Abbey of Dryburgh. Mertoun formed part of the Presbytery of Selkirk until 1613, part of the Presbytery of Earlston from 1613 to 1929, and part of the Presbytery of Melrose from 1929 to 1976. With the restructuring of presbyteries in 1976, it became part of the Presbytery of Melrose and Peebles. Mertoun was linked to Maxton from 1954 until 1981, when it became linked with St. Boswells. In 1994, however, Maxton and Mertoun were united, maintaining the link with St. Boswells. |
