There was a church established as far back as the 6th century at Kirkapol in the north-east of Tiree and ruins of a later parish church still mark the spot of this early site. Tiree originally existed as a single parish, but was later divided into two parishes, Kirkapol, containing the north-east portion of the island, and Sorobie (also known as Heylipol), containing the South-West. In 1618 the parishes of Kirkapol and Sorobie were united together along with the parish of Coll, however, Coll was later severed from the two united parishes of Tiree in 1865, and ten years later in 1875, Sorobie was disjoined from Kirkapol leaving it to stand once more as an independent parish. In 1952 Tiree (Kirkapol) was united again with Hylipol and in 1972 the kirk session of Tiree and Coll was formed when Tiree and Hylipol united with Coll. The union with Coll was later severed in 1986 in favour of a linkage, but this was also terminated in 1994. The charge of Tiree is at present sitting as a vacancy. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Mull until, By Act of Assembly XX, 1963, The Presbytery of Lorn and the Presbytery of Mull were united under the name of the Presbytery of Lorn and Mull. |
