The church of Luss was dedicated to St Kessog and was a prebend of Glasgow. The island of Innistavannach in Loch Lomond within the parish is believed to have been the dwelling-place of St Kessog. Luss parish of boundaries, as the originally stood, were reduced both in 1621 when Buchanan parish was disjoined and in 1659 when the parish of Arrochar was disjoined. In 1771 a new parish church was built and this was later replaced in 1875 when the present church was erected by Sir James Colquhoun in memory of his father. Following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, Luss Parish Church united with the former United Free Church congregation of Bandry in 1940. After the union the session continued under the name of Luss and the old parish church remained in use for public worship. Luss was once more connected to Arrochar in 1986 when the two sessions were linked together. The kirk session sits within the Presbytery of Dumbarton. |
