The parish of Monkland Old, which was known anciently as Baldernoch, belonged prior to the reformation to the Abbey of Newbattle, and it was for this reason that the parish obtained its name. The parish of Old Monkland contained the area of Coatbridge and later became known as Coatbridge: Old Monkland. In 1640 the parish of Monkland was divided into two, that of Old Monkland and of New Monkland. Monkland Old parish church was rebuilt in 1790. The kirk session sits within the Presbytery of Hamilton. |
