A church was first built at Cleland in 1877 and it later followed that the parish was disjoined quoad sacra from the parishes of Shotts and of Bothwell on the 11th December 1882. Ministry at the parish is recorded from 1878 in the person of George Mackie. In 1929, following the Union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Cleland Parish church was united with the former United Free Church congregation of Cleland. After the union the old parish church remained in use. The kirk session sits within the Presbytery of Hamilton. |
