Prior to the reformation Dunoon existed as a mensal prebend belonging to the Bishop of Argyll and there was a collegiate church founded in Kilmun in 1442 by Sir Duncan Campbell of Lochawe. The parishes of Dunoon and Kilmun were often held by the same incumbent and, as a result, efforts were made from 1629 to have the two parishes fully established as separate charges. Success however was not be had in the 17th century and towards the end of the century Kilmun and Dunoon were united together. The union however was only to last until 1894 when Kilmun was disjoined quoad sacra from Dunoon. Kilmun later went on to link with Sandbank in 1967 and Dunoon united with Dunoon St Cuthbert's in 1982. The united parish of Dunoon and Kilmun sat within the Presbytery of Dunoon. |
