Prior to the reformation, the church of Culter was dedicated to St Michael and belonged to the Abbey of Kelso. Ministers to the parish are recorded from 1560 in the person of Archibald Livingstone. In 1794 The Lords of Council and Session gave a decreet suppressing the parish of Kilbucho, and in doing so annexed a part of that parish to Culter, substantially increasing both the territory and the population of Culter. A new parish church was later erected in 1810. Culter was linked with the parish of Libberton and Quothquan in 1972 and further with Symington in 1978. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Biggar and later of Lanark. |
