Prior to the reformation the church of Cockpen belonged to the Abbey of Newbattle and recorded reference to the church dates back as far as 1176. The present day church was built between 1818 and 1820 approximately a mile from the site of the old church of Cockpen. Carrington and Cockpen were united in 1975 to form the parish of Cockpen and Carrington. Cockpen and Carrington was later linked in 1977 with Lassawade and in 1991 with Rosewell. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Dalkeith and later of Lothian. |
