The parish of Buittle was united, prior to the Reformation, to Kirkennan. The parish church was erected in 1819 on the site of the old church of Buittle, the ruins of which still remain in the grounds of the churchyard and which are thought to date back in part to as early as the 13th century. The old church of Buittle was granted to Sweetheart Abbey by the Bishop of Whithorn. There are no traces still in existence of Kirkennan old Parish Church. The parish of Buittle and Kelton was formed on the 20th March 1983 by the union of Buittle and Kelton. The newly united parish was linked on the same date with Castle Douglas St Andrew's however this link was later terminated in 1989 and in 1991 a link was formed with Auchencairn and Rerrick. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Kirkcudbright and later of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. |
