Following the establishment of presbyteries by the General Assembly in 1581, the Presbytery of Abernethy was conjoined with Aberlour and was known as Inveraven. Aberlour and Abernethy were disjoined again in 1632 but only for a short time, and the two Presbyteries were once again conjoined in 1645. Prior to 1645, although the Presbyteries met separately, there were a number of joint meetings held annually, with two separate minute books of any joint session being recorded. That of the upper (Abernethy) and the lower (Aberlour). Abernethy also formed a part of the United Presbytery of Moray for a time prior to 1702 and from 1702 to 1707 it was part of the Presbytery of Elgin, Aberlour, and Abernethy. Abernethy once again became conjoined with Aberlour from 1707-1709, but from 1709 stood as the independent Presbytery of Abernethy, the register of which commences on the 26th June 1722. The court of Abernethy formerly sat within the Synod of Moray. |
