Prior to the reformation in 1560 the rectory of Durisdeer formed a prebend belonging to Glasgow Cathedral and it is though that the church was dedicated to St Cuthbert. In 1727 an area of the parish of Kilbride was annexed to Durisdeer. Durisdeer kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Penpont, however, after the union in 1929 of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, the Presbytery of Penpont ceased to exist and all parishes within its jurisdiction were transferred to the Presbytery of Dumfries. With the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976 Penpont became part of the presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. Also as a result of the 1929 Union the former United Free Church of Durisdeer united with the parish church, after which time the former United Free church was used as a church hall. The parish of Closeburn was linked with Durisdeer in 1980. |
