Edinburgh: Cramond church was erected in 1656 on the site of a previous medieval kirk. Prior to the reformation Cramond existed as a mensal kirk dedicated to St Columba and belonged to the Bishop of Dunkeld. The church was enlarged in 1654 and again in 1711. The parish of Cramond originally incorporated Granton, Blackhall and Clermiston, however in 1887 a church was erected at Granton to serve as a place of worship for the workers at Granton church and was granted quoad sacra status in 1889. In 1900 a chapel of ease was built at Blackhall which was also erected as a parish quoad sacra several years later in 1922. At the disruption in 1843 the minister of Cramond joined the Free Church, taking many of Cramond's parishioners with him. Cramond Free Church later became Davidson's Mains. It followed that after 1929, when the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland United, Davidson's Mains was granted a piece of Cramond parish and the parish was further reduced when Clermiston Church Extension Parish was erected and Corstorphine Craigsbank parish was extended north, both swallowing up areas previously within Cramond parish. The kirk session of Edinburgh: Cramond sits within the Presbytery of Edinburgh. |
