The Kirk Session of Peebles Old was established following the Reformation in 1560. Ministers to the parish are recorded from 1560. The parish church was originally the pre-Reformation Church of the Holy Cross, founded by King Alexander III in 1261. In 1784, a new church was built on the Castle Hill, which was in turn replaced with a newer building in 1887. Following the establishment of presbyteries by the General Assembly in 1581, the Kirk Session of Peebles Old became part of the Presbytery of Peebles. In 1929 the United Free Church passed back to the Established Church, and in order to diffrentiate this congregation ftom the former United Free congregation, it became known as Peebles Old Church of Scotland. In 1976, it became part of the Presbytery of Melrose and Peebles. In recent years, several changes have been made to the parish: in 1977, Peebles Old was linked with Eddleston, and from 1984 to 1992 it was linked with Lyne and Manor. |
