The parish of Rhu (or Row) was disjoined from the parish of Roseneath in 1648 and erected into an independent parish. A new parish church of Rhu was erected at this time as, prior to the severing of Rhu, the nearest place of worship for the parishioners of the newly formed session was at Roseneath or Cardross. In 1776 a new and more commodious church was erected but this was later replaced by the present day church which dates back to 1851. Remains of the 1776 building can still be seen in the churchyard. In 1954 Rhu and Shandon were linked together and later, in 1970, this link was terminated in favour of a union between the two parishes under the name of Rhu and Shandon. The kirk session sits within the Presbytery of Dumbarton. |
