It is thought that the first church of Rothiemay was built in the 6th century and was dedicated to St Drostan and prior to the reformation Rothiemay was a mensal kirk of the Bishop of Moray. In 1752 the Earl of Fife pulled down the old church because it blocked his view from Rothiemay Castle and erected a new building on the present site, which was also rebuilt at a later date. Following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, Rothiemay parish church was united in 1935 with the former United Free Church congregation of Rothiemay North. Both churches continued in use for a time after the union but the North Church was later closed. Rothiemay was later linked with Grange in 1975. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Strathbogie until by Act of Assembly, 1661, the Presbytery of Strathbogie and the Presbytery of Fordyce were united together under the name of the Presbytery of Strathbogie and Fordyce, it presently falls within the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Moray. |
