The church of Thurso was dedicated to St Peter and and is thought to have been founded by Gilbert, Bishop of Caithness (d 1245). In the early 17th century the church was made the Cathedral for the See of Caithness. The present parish church was erected in 1832 and opened for public worship in the following year. There was a free church erected in Thurso in 1871 by the name of St Andrew's. This congregation became part of the United Free Church in 1900 and following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, the congregation of St Andrew's and the old parish church, now known as St Peter's, were united in 1946 to form the congregation of Thurso St Peter's and St Andrew's Kirk Session. Both churches remained in use following the union until 1968 when St Andrew's was closed as a place of worship. The kirk session sits within the Presbytery of Caithness. |
