The church of East Calder was dedicated to St Cuthbert and prior to the reformation it belonged to the Abbey of Kelso. The parish was disjoined from West Calder in 1641 and erected into an independent parish, however in 1751 the Commissioner of Teinds united East Calder to the parish of Kirknewton, after which point the name of East Calder was dropped. In the same year a new parish church was erected to serve the united session. A United Free Church charge of East Calder was established during the 19th century, ministry of which is recorded from 1889. Following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free church in 1929, the Free Church session of East Calder was united with Kirknewton in 1943 under the name of Kirknewton and East Calder. The kirk session of East Calder sat within the presbytery of Edinburgh. |
