The kirk session of Kirknewton has sat, throughout most of its lifetime, within the Presbytery of Edinburgh, although it was for a time around 1591 annexed to the Presbytery of Linlithgow and since the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976 it has fallen within the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of West Lothian. The kirk session consists of the two, formerly separate, parishes of Kirknewton and East Calder. The two were united together in 1751 by the Court of Teinds. A United Free Church charge of East Calder was established during the 19th century, ministry of which is recorded from 1889. Following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free church in 1929, the Free Church session of East Calder was united with Kirknewton in 1943 under the name of Kirknewton and East Calder. The parish church was built in 1750 and was later enlarged and restored in 1872. |
