The Presbytery of Islay and Jura was severed from the Presbytery of Kintyre and erected into a separate court in 1836 and the register of the Presbytery begins on 20 July 1836. Islay and Jura was originally made up of the following six parishes: Kildalton, Oa, Kilmeny, Portnahaven, Bowmore and Kilchoam, and upon the erection of the presbytery, Bowmore was appointed as the meeting place of the court By the early 20th century Jura had been dropped from the name of the Presbytery, leaving it known simply as the Presbytery of Islay. With the restructuring of presbyteries in 1976, Islay became part of the Presbytery of South Argyll. The court of Islay and Jura formerly sat within the Synod of Argyll. |
