The medieval church of St Mary's is claimed to have been founded by David, earl of Huntingdon, brother of King William I. Earl David granted the church of Dundee to the Tironensian Abbey of Lindores around 1200. In 1296 Edward I burned Dundee (St Mary's) and by 1548 the church had been completely destroyed by the English. Dundee Parish Church (St Mary's) occupies the eastern part of the building known as Dundee City Churches. In 1815 four churches occupied this building. A fire in 1841 destroyed much of this building and it was consequently rebuilt. The new St Mary's building was completed in 1844 and the vestibule was redesigned in 1960. In 1897 a stained glass window was gifted to the church in celebration of Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee. During the 1990's Dundee City Churches Restoration Project renovated Dundee (St Mary's). The first Presbyterian minister was inaugurated in 1558. Dundee (St Mary's) church is in the Presbytery of Dundee, which was in the synod of Angus and Mearns until the abolition of synods in 1992. |
