During the 12th century St Mary's Cistercian Abbey of Coupar was founded by King Malcolm IV. Coupar Angus kirk session existed originally as part of the parish of Bendochy, however at the request of James VI and the Commission for the Plantation of Kirks, it was agreed to build a new church within the precincts of the Abbey of Coupar to serve as a parish church for the parishioners in the town of Coupar and on the south side of the river Isla. It followed that by charter in 1618, Coupar Angus was erected into a separate parish, and the town of Coupar, along with an area to the south side of the river Isla, was annexed from the Parish of Bendochy. The church of Coupar Angus was later rebuilt in 1780 and again in 1859.Following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free church in 1929, the Free Church session of Coupar Angus St Andrew's and the parish church congregation, now named Coupar Angus Abbey, were united together in 1948. The united session was known as Coupar Angus Abbey and the old parish church remained in use as the place of worship. Bendochy and Coupar Angus Abbey were linked at the beginning of the 21st century. The kirk session of Coupar Angus Abbey sat within the Presbytery of Meigle and later of Dunkeld and Meigle. |
