In 1128 Liberton church, which originally existed as a dependant chapel of St Cuthbert's, was granted by David I to Holyrood Abbey and it is believed to have been erected into a parish around a century later. Liberton parish church was rebuilt in 1815 to replace the old church which had been destroyed in a fire. An additional church was erected in Liberton, in connection with the General Assembly's church erection scheme in 1837. The new church was erected within the Gilmerton area of the parish of Liberton and subsequently in 1860 the district attached to the new church was erected by the Court of Teinds into the quoad sacra parish of Gilmerton. Liberton kirk session sits within the Presbytery of Edinburgh. |
