The erection of the Presbytery of Wigtown was sanctioned by the General Assembly in 1581 and there remains record of its existence from 1593. The register of the Presbytery begins on the 22nd October 1696. In 1963, by Act of Assembly XXI, the Presbytery of Wigtown and the Presbytery of Stranraer were united under the name of the Presbytery of Wigtown and Stranraer. Wigtown formerly sat with the Synod of Galloway and later of Ayr. |
