Prior to the reformation, the church of Whittinghame was a prebend of the collegiate church of Dunbar. The original church in Whittinghame is believed to have dated back to the 7th century when St Cuthbert brought Christianity to the Lothians. A new church was erected in 1225 and after falling into a state of disrepair it was replaced with the present day building in 1722. Stenton was linked with Whittinghame in 1957 and the parish was further linked in 1974 with Prestonkirk. The three linked parishes were later united in 1999 to form the parish of Traprain. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Dunbar, later of Haddington and Dunbar and presently of Lothian. |
