Anciently, Westruther formed a part of the parish of Home and following the reformation sat within the jurisdiction of the parish of Gordon. Westruther however, was disjoined, along with Spottiswood, by the Commissioner for the Plantation of Kirks in 1647 and was united with the parish of Bassendean. In 1649, following the annexation from Gordon, a church was built at the village of Westruther and the congregation of the newly erected parish of Westruther was transferred here from the old chapel of Bassendean, which had been used as temporary place of worship. Legerwood was linked with Westruther in 1963 and a further link followed later in 1970 with Gordon St Michael's. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Earlston and later of Duns. |
