The church of Westerkirk, formerly known as Westerker, prior to the reformation belonged to the Abbey of Melrose. A chapel of St Martin was founded within the parish in 1391 and ministry is recorded here from 1611 in the person of James Johnstone.Westerkirk was linked with Ewes in 1955 and with Langholme Erskine in 1970. The linkages were however terminated in 1974 in favour of a union with Ewes and Westerkirk and of a linking in the same year with Langholme. Later in 1980 Langholme was united with Ewes and Westerkirk to form the parish of Langholme, Ewes and Westerkirk. Canonbie was linked with the parish between the years of 1990 and 1998. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Langholm and later of Hawick. |
