Prior to the reformation the church of Tranent belonged to the Abbey of Holyroodhouse. It is believed that the church was first erected in the middle of the 11th century and the original building survived until 1797 when it was demolished to make way for the present parish church, completed in 1801, and most recently restored in 1954. The old parish boundaries pre-reformation incorporated the entire area that was later to exist as the parish of Prestonpans and also substantial areas of the parishes of Pencaitland and Gladsmuir. Up to the year 1839 Tranent parish church served also as a place of worship for Cockenzie and Port Seaton. In 1980 the old parish church congregation of Tranent was united with Tranent Wishart St Andrew's, the charge however continued to exist under the name of Tranent. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Haddington, later of Haddington and Dunbar and presently of Lothian. |
