The parish of Temple was originally known as Balantroda however, when David I granted the lands of Balantroda to the Knights Templar, who maintained a base here between the middle of the 12th century and the early 14th century, the village and the church were re-named accordingly. Between the time of the dissolution of the Knights Templar and the reformation the church belonged to the Preceptory of St John at Torphichen and was later established as a collegiate church of Corstorphine. This arrangement was however dissolved in 1634 and the dissolution was ratified by Parliament in 1646 The old church dates back to the 13th century but was in part rebuilt after the reformation and the present day building, which has now been converted into a private dwelling, was built in 1831-1832. In 1593 the parishes of Clerkington and Moorfoot were joined to Temple. Carrington was linked with Temple between the years of 1956 and 1975 and Gorebridge St Pauls and Gorebridge Stobswell united with Temple in 1975 to form the session of Gorebridge. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Dalkeith and later of Lothian. |
