Prior to the reformation the parish of Tarbat belonged to the Abbey of Fearn and the Church was dedicated to St Colmog. Ministry here is recorded from 1593 in the person of John Munro. The church is known to date back to at least 1255 and the present day building dates from 1746, when the old church underwent a complete restoration. In 1946, after the 1929 union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Tarbat parish church was united with the United Free congregation of Tarbat East. Following the union the East Church came into use as the parish church. Tarbat was linked at the beginning of the 21st century with Fearn Abbey and Nigg. The kirk session sat with the Presbytery of Tain and later of Ross. |
