The Presbytery of Tain was erected by the General Assembly on the 11th December 1706 and the register begins on the 31st December of the same year. There is however mention of the Presbytery having been in existence for some time prior to this date as there exists reference to the Presbytery as far back as 1588. The erection of the Presbytery in 1706 may be reffering to a re-erection following the Revolution Settlement. The presbytery sat within the Synod of Ross and later of Ross, Sutherland and Caithness. As from 1 September 1981, the Presbytery of Tain united with the Presbytery of Chanonry and Dingwall to be known as Presbytery of Ross. |
