Prior to the reformation the church of Symington, Lanarkshire, belonged to the Abbey of Kelso. The church was founded by Simon Loccard who held lands in Lanarkshire and Ayrshire and who is believed to have given his name to the village and parish. The parish of Symington was established prior to 1232 when it was disjoined from Wodekirk and erected into a separate parish. The church was made into the parish church at this stage but continued to belong to the Monks of Kelso up to the reformation. Symington (Lanarkshire) was linked with Culter and Libberton and Quothquan on the 4th January 1978, however this link was terminated in 1995 in favour of a linkage with Cairngryffe. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Biggar and later of Lanark. |
