The parish of Stenton was formerly called Pitcoks, after the village in which the original church, which dates back to the 14th century stood. Prior to the reformation it existed as a prebend of Dunbar. The church was moved to it's present situation, in Stenton, in around 1561 where it stood until 1828 when a new building was erected due the state of disrepair that the old church had fallen into. Stenton was linked in 1957 with Whittinghame and later in 1974 with Prestonkirk. The three parishes were united in 1999 under the name of Traprain. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Dunbar, later of Haddington and Dunbar and presently of Lothian. |
