The Presbytery of Selkirk was erected by the General Assembly in 1581. A number of its parishes were annexed in 1613 and incorporated within the Presbytery of Earlston which was established within that same year. The original seat of the Court was appointed as Melrose and remained so until 1640, when it was transferred to Selkirk. Records of the original Presbytery of Melrose still in existence cover the period running between January 1607 and January 1619. Records of the Presbytery of Selkirk commence in 1691. The seat of the Presbytery reverted once more to Melrose in 1929 and with the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976 it came to form part of the Presbytery of Melrose and Peebles. The court formerly sat within the Synod of Merse and Teviotdale. |
