The parish church of St Vigean's dates back to the 13th century when it was dedicated by Bishop David de Bernham of St Andrews. Later, in 1872, the church was restored and enlarged . In 1953 the parish of Auchmithie united with St Vigean's under the name of St Vigean's and Auchmithie. After the union both churches continued in use and the session was further linked with Arbroath Knox in 1982. The kirk session, which was latterly termed Abroath St Vigean's, sat within the Presbytery of Arbroath until by Act of Assembly 1961, the Presbytery of Arbroath, The Presbytery of Forfar and the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun were united under the name of Angus and Mearns. Following the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976 it became part of the Presbytery of Angus. |
