The church of St Boswells was formerly known as Lessudden and was dedicated to St Mary. In 1652 the parish church was transferred from Lessuden to St Bosel's where it replaced an ancient chapel that had been dedicated to St Bosel's. The church remains at the same location and has since been extensively repaired in 1791 and enlarged in 1824. The united Free Session of St Boswell's was united with St Boswell's Old in 1940. Following the local union, and owing to location and being in a considerable state of disrepair, the old church was dismantled in 1951. St Modan's church consequently underwent repairs and was used as the parish church. In 1981 the parish of Merton was linked with St Boswells and this arrangement continued following the union of Maxton and Merton in 1994. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Selkirk later Melrose and currently of Melrose and Peebles. |
