Pre-reformation there existed an ancient chapel at Preston which was a vicarage of the Abbey of Holyrood. The chapel however was burnt down during Hertford's invasion in 1544 and was never repaired. Prestonpans parish was originally distributed into two baronies, that of Preston or Salt Preston and of Pans, and the two, for a time after 1544, became attached to Tranent. In 1595 however the General Assembly declared Prestonpans to be a parish quoad sacra and a new church was built in 1596. The parliament of Perth, in 1606, erected the newly built church into a parish church, which was originally to be called the parish kirk of Preston. The session of Prestonpans Preston was united with the United Free Church Session of Prestonpans Grange in 1981 to form the parish of Prestonpans Prestongrange. The kirk session of Prestonpans (Preston) sat within the Presbytery of Haddington, later Haddington and Dunbar and currently of Lothian. |
